Choose the category and the size system of your value, then enter the size. The matching sizes in all the other systems are looked up in the chart and shown together, along with the sizes just below and above (about a half size apart).

What you can do on this page
- Enter a size in any one system (US / Canada, UK / India, EU, Japan (cm), China or foot length) and see the matching sizes in all the others at once
- Conversions use a separate chart for each of 4 categories: men, women, kids (ages 5–12) and babies and toddlers (ages 0–4)
- If your value is not in the chart, the closest row is shown, and you can also check the sizes just below and above it (about a half size apart)
- A plain-language explanation of how each sizing system works and size charts you can paste into Excel or Google Sheets are also on this page
What is this calculation used for?
European online stores often list shoes only in EU sizes, such as "EU 42". In this page's men's chart, EU 42 matches about a US 9.5, and a US 9 matches EU 41.
International returns cost time and shipping, so before you order, check the US equivalent here, and also check the product page's size chart or the brand's chart if there is one. Doing both cuts down on wrong sizes.
Many unisex sneakers are sold in men's sizes, and the box usually lists US men's, US women's, UK, EU and cm. In this page's charts, a women's US 8 matches a men's US 7 (both 24.5 cm).
Knowing that the same US number stands for a different length for men and women helps when you enter a sneaker raffle or buy a model released only in men's sizes.
When you shop for shoes abroad, stores usually show only the local system: EU sizes in continental Europe, UK sizes in Britain, and cm in Japan. If you note your foot length and your size in each system before you go, you can tell the staff what you need.
The same label can fit differently by country and brand, so try shoes on before you buy, especially when traveling.
Shoes from European kids' brands are usually sized in EU sizes. In this page's kids chart, EU 30 matches about a kids' US 12 to 12.5. Children's feet can grow several millimeters to nearly 1 cm (about 1/4 to 3/8 in) in six months, so measure the foot again each time and look it up in the chart.
Note that babies and toddlers (ages 0–4) and kids (ages 5–12) have separate charts, and that US kids' sizes start again at 1 after 13.5.
On resale and secondhand marketplaces, a shoe made for another market may have a tag with only "UK 7" or "EU 38" and no US size.
When you sell, listing the US equivalent gives buyers confidence; when you buy, the chart tells you whether it will fit. Always check whether the size on the tag is a men's, women's or kids' size.
Formula
Symbols and terms
Symbols
| \(L\) | L | Foot length: from the back of the heel to the tip of the longest toe. It is measured in inches in the US and UK formulas, and in cm in the EU, China and Japan formulas. |
| \(U\) | U | A US / Canada shoe size. (Example - a men's US 8 matches a foot about 10 in (25.4 cm) long) |
| \(E\) | E | An EU (European) shoe size. (Example - for women, EU 38 matches US 7 to 7.5) |
| \(J\) | J | A Japan shoe size. Under JIS, the foot length in cm is the size. (Example - a 25.5 cm foot takes a 25.5 cm shoe) |
Terms
| foot length | The length from the very back of the heel to the tip of the longest toe. Stand with your heel against a wall, mark where your longest toe ends, and measure. Your two feet are often slightly different, so go by the longer one. |
| width | How wide or roomy a shoe is around the ball of the foot. US widths use letters: for men, D is standard, 2E (EE) is wide and 4E is extra wide; for women, B is standard, D is wide and 2A is narrow. These charts do not include width, but a shoe with the right length still will not fit if the width is wrong, so check it when you try shoes on. |
| last | The foot-shaped form a shoe is built on. Each brand and each shoe has its own last, so the same size label can fit larger or smaller. This is the main reason these charts are only a guide. |
| barleycorn | An old unit of length, based on a grain of barley, equal to 1/3 inch (about 8.5 mm). In US and UK sizes, each full size step changes the length by one barleycorn (1/3 inch). |
| Paris point | The unit behind EU (continental European) shoe sizes: 1 point = 2/3 cm (about 6.7 mm). Each step up in EU size adds about 2/3 cm to the foot length. |
| half size | A size halfway between two whole sizes. US and UK sizes have half sizes (8, 8.5, 9 ...), and Japan sizes go in 0.5 cm steps, but EU and Chinese sizes usually go in whole steps. |
| kids' sizes | US children's sizes count up to 13.5 and then start again at 1 for older kids (often written 1Y, 2Y and so on, where Y stands for youth). That is why the kids chart goes from US 13.5 to US 1. |
| JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards) | Japan's national standards for industrial products. JIS S 5037 sets shoe sizes as the foot length in cm, which is where Japanese sizes such as "25.5 cm" come from. |
| toe room | The extra space in front of the toes inside a shoe. Your foot moves forward as you walk, so this space is needed, and shoes are made with it already included. That is why you choose a Japan size equal to your foot length. |

How to have ChatGPT do the calculation
You are an assistant for converting shoe sizes. Do the following calculation by actually running Python code, and base your answer only on the numbers from the execution result (do not answer by mental math or guessing). For a foot that is 10 inches long (1 inch = 2.54 cm), find each of the following estimated sizes: 1. US / Canada size for men (3 × foot length in inches − 22) 2. US / Canada size for women (3 × foot length in inches − 21) 3. UK / India size (3 × foot length in inches − 23) 4. EU size (1.5 × foot length in cm + 2) 5. China size (2 × foot length in cm − 10) Show the formulas you used and the numbers from the execution result. At the end, add a short note that these are estimate formulas and that a size chart and a try-on should come first.
